Indoor cats live two to five years longer than outdoor cats on average. The tradeoff: they live in a controlled, sensory-limited environment that provides none of the hunting opportunity, territorial exploration, or environmental variety that sustains outdoor cats psychologically.
Catnip toys, used correctly, address a specific portion of that gap. Here's how to use them well.
Catnip response is genetic. Approximately 68 to 80% of cats carry the gene that makes them responsive to nepetalactone, the active compound in Nepeta cataria. The remaining 20 to 32% are non-responsive — not broken, not low-quality cats, simply missing the relevant receptor sensitivity.

As a result the best catnip toys also have silvervine in them as there is a wider response rate for cats to silvervine too.
Kittens under six months are typically non-responsive regardless of genetics; the response develops with sexual maturity. If yours isn't responding, this is the most likely explanation.
This matters because it means catnip toys should be selected based on whether they work for your specific cat, not because they're marketed as premium.
What makes a catnip toy actually effective
Catnip potency is everything. The nepetalactone content in budget catnip products ranges from trace to minimal; the response you get reflects that. Therapeutic-grade organic catnip — from a traceable source, stored correctly, without synthetic fragrance additions — produces a measurably different response. The indicator when you open fresh, quality catnip: immediate, strong, distinctive scent. Flat-smelling catnip has either degraded or was never concentrated enough to matter.
Construction quality determines longevity. A toy that disintegrates in two sessions isn't useful enrichment — it's a packaging exercise. Dense seams, natural materials, size appropriate to your cat.
By cat type:
High-energy cats (the 3am disturbance architects): kicker toys. Large, elongated — the 25 to 30 centimetre range is the functional sweet spot; too small and the mechanics don't work. Designed for full-body engagement: front legs gripping, back legs rabbit-kicking. One of the few toy formats that can genuinely tire an energetic cat before bed. Consistent pre-bedtime use across two to three weeks produces measurable improvement in nighttime disruption.
Puzzle-oriented cats: catnip-infused puzzle feeders. Mental stimulation combined with scent motivation. Start at lower difficulty and increase gradually — the goal is challenge, not frustration.
Window-watchers: suction-cup catnip toys that attach to glass. Combines passive watching with active engagement. Check suction quality before committing; a toy that drops mid-session creates negative association with that format.
Older or overweight cats: lightweight toys, like our designer clutch catnip toys, that invite batting and slow chasing. Low barrier, low impact, movement throughout the day rather than intense sessions.
The rotation principle (the thing most people aren't doing)
The most common catnip toy mistake: buying a toy, leaving it on the floor, concluding that cats "don't like it" when engagement drops after three days.
Cats habituate to constant stimuli. The toy isn't boring — the fact that it's permanently available is. Three or four toys in active rotation, the rest stored out of sight in a sealed container. Swap every five to seven days. When the "new" toy comes back out after a fortnight away, the cat engages with it as if it's unfamiliar. Because for practical purposes, it is.
£30 spent on four quality toys used properly outperforms £100 spent on toys that live on the floor until they become invisible.
Interactive play remains the non-negotiable
Catnip toys are enrichment. They're not a replacement for interactive play, which provides the hunting sequence — stalk, chase, pounce, capture — that self-play toys can't replicate. Fifteen minutes with a wand toy daily, before the evening wind-down, is the single highest-impact enrichment decision for indoor cats.
The catnip-infused wand attachment gives you the scent motivation plus the interactive element. [See the full enrichment range here.]
